Empires On Fire EP by BANNERS

Who Should Buy This: People looking for “chill” music that they can either ponder on or zone out to, and anybody who is into alternative music.
Album: Empires On Fire EP
Genre: alternative, indie
Music Rating: 9/10

Sounds Like: Amber Run, Bishop Briggs, Vancouver Sleep Clinic
Best thing About this Album: The effortlessness of the depth on these tracks might be favorite thing about this EP. Typically, music will either lean towards being immediately accessible or taking a long time to unpack and appreciate. These songs accomplish both. The music instantly grabs you, but is also thoughtfully textured and deeply layered enough to provide more and more substance the longer you sit with it.
One thing I wish was different: Four of these songs were previously released singles. While all five tracks are amazing, I had already heard most of them. I am always going to want more new music from BANNERS, so selfishly, I wish this EP was longer or had more previously unreleased tracks on it.

As a longtime fan of Mike’s work, I’m always happy and anxious to hear new music from him! This sophomore EP from BANNERS takes us into a bit of a different direction, but maintains the strong writing style that we all fell in love with early on.

If you’ve been paying attention, much of this EP will sound familiar to you, but there is a brand new track that lends its title to the EP, and is one of the very best of BANNERS in my opinion. In many ways, this EP feels grounded and concrete in all the places that the debut EP was ethereal and otherworldly. That being said, the uplifting and dynamic atmosphere will feel instantly familiar to those familiar with earlier work from BANNERS.

Here are some of my favorite lines from each track to give you a better lyrical sample of the whole album. Take a look and then take a listen!

“I don’t want to die or fade away. I just want to be someone.” — Someone To You

“Like a city overthrown, we’re turning buildings into stones.” — Empires On Fire

“Worlds apart when it went dark. You were always on my mind.” — Firefly

“I’ll follow you into the storm.” — Into the Storm

“We’re distant stars lost in the dark.” — Holy Ground

That’s it. If you loved these songs as much as I did, please consider supporting BANNERS by purchasing the EP from the official website or on your favorite digital music store (iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon, etc.)

And holler at me in the comments! I’d love to talk to you all about this album.
