If I Never Speak Again by Hearts Like Lions

Who Should Buy This: 90’s kids, alternative/rock music fans, and people who like to think while they groove.
Album: If I Never Speak Again
Artist: Hearts Like Lions
Genre: alternative, indie, rock
Music Rating: 9/10
Lyrics Rating: 8/10
Overall:
9/10
Sounds Like: Anberlin, The Maine, Relient K, Switchfoot
Best thing About this Album: I feel like there is a really fantastic mix of thoughtful contemplation and uplifting empowerment that never veers into the saccharine (both musically and lyrically).
One thing I wish was different: The lyrics are wonderful in terms of content and intellectual creativity, but I would personally love to see a lot more technicality in the structure and composition.

This album is a really interesting little gem. It’s a bit of a sleeper album to me. Although I immediately fell in love with it upon first listen, it’s one that genuinely gets better with each play. Though it has some extremely catchy music, it doesn’t grab you and shake you around in the way that we are accustomed to in today’s fast-paced world. But I find that when I give enough time and attention, I oftentimes prefer the more unassuming art to the flash and burn of pop culture.

Here are some of my favorite lines from each track to give you a better sample of the whole album. Give it your ear, let it marinate for a bit, and you just might fall in love!

“It’s not enough to be a satisfaction.” — You’re on Your Own (Enough)

“You’ve got a lot to say, but I’ve got more to say to you.” — It’s Not Gonna Be This Way

“Now what’s it feel like knowing that you are trying to be someone else?” — Pretty Little Phase

“There’s a message you’re not receiving.” — Get This Through

“Say that you never really meant for it to be such a problem.” — Make Your Move

“I’ll never get it back. It’s woven into the chest of those who were the ones I used to know.” — Thank You Very Little

“This road is pretty old, but these cracks are a beautiful thing that’s happened.” — Let On

“Would you go this far just to be the one to let us all down?” — Am I Afraid?

“Maybe it’s you, or maybe I’m just dead to the thought of starting over.” — Opportunities

“We’ve got this selfish desire.” — If I Never Speak Again

That’s it. If you loved these songs as much as I did, please consider supporting Hearts Like Lions by purchasing the album from Tooth & Nail Records or on your favorite digital music store (iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon, etc.)

And holler at me in the comments! I’d love to talk to you all about this album.

I have never heard of this band before. And I’m no 90’s kid. My I do like to think to alternative rock.
So I gave it a relaxed listen.

They had me from the 1st track. Thanks, Anie!

    My own favorites:

    Enough:
You want to know me, well here I am.
You’ve got to figure this one out on your own.
It’s not enough to be a satisfaction.
I’ll try to show you the best I can.

    Pretty Little Phase
Not sure I can pick one phrase about the pretty little phase. I can see why you listed it as a favorite. Love how the music mirrors so well the message.

    Get this through
Normal isn’t normal and there’s no such thing, you know.
Think of all the good things and remember you have hope.
(but I will have to listen to this one again; not sure I got all of the message)

    Thank you very little
    One thing
(I think I like this one; needs another listen. Think I’ve been there. Waiting for the other to change; not knowing the other is consumed with their own one thing.)

    Let On
    Let it break you
(seems like a perfect breakthrough from the previous track)

Oh bother. I’ve already listed more than 4 favorites and I’m not done listening!
So, I can make it just four because I love “Thank you very little” and “Let on” as two parts of the same thing. So there.

    K2

So actually, this is an album I would put on a listen to every track.

Yay! I’m so glad you liked it; it’s truly an amazing album. You listed some of my favorite lines as well! This was one where I had a REALLY hard time trying to pick out my favorite lines from each track, because there are SO MANY amazing lyrics. Of course, the music is amazing as well! (The reason for the slightly lower rating on the lyrics for the album is technical/structural. It’s still pretty incredible though.) Hope you enjoy the rest of your listen!
