Best thing About this Album: This album honors the history of the band without getting stuck in the past.
One thing I wish was different: The vocals on “Pass the Baby” were not strong enough to carry the tone of the track in my opinion. I couldn’t get fully immersed in it, because I feel like it wasn’t 100% committed to itself.
Website: Jimmy Eat World
Favorites: Sure and Certain, You Are Free
Parental Guidance: Pretty Grids has a cheeky line that hints at or could be misheard as a swear word: “a half-dancing attempt to learn your name”. Pass the Baby can be tense. “No, they won’t shoot. You pass the baby here.” The context, I take to be highly metaphorical, but you could easily take it politically. Through has a swear word at the beginning of the second verse.

The band has not altogether abandoned the sound that made them famous, but they have plenty of new ideas and new things to say. This is Jimmy Eat World, so rhythm guitar ftw! We all knew that was going to be fabulous. What is updated is the more mature sound profile along with more modern synths and vocal effects. Lyrically, this album is relatable, thought-provoking, and overflowing with delightful technicality at almost every turn. Here are some of my favorite lines from each song to give you a taste of the album lyrically.
“For just the possibility, I’d have given anything.” — You with Me
“Sure and certain, wander ’til we’re old. Lost and lurking, wonder ’til we’re cold.” — Sure and Certain
“With a quiet face, I break. I shatter.” — It Matters
“No place feels right for a busy mind.” — Pretty Grids
“The best decision made was let me take the stage.” — Pass the Baby
“Disguised as patience time gets wasted.” — Get Right
“You are free to be who you want, what you need.” — You Are Free
“It doesn’t have to hurt anymore.” — The End Is Beautiful
“The one way getting out is through.” — Through
“It’s all what you do when no one is there. It’s all what you do when no one cares.” — Integrity Blues
“Love don’t come to you. Who knew? It just was there always.” — Pol Roger
