Skin&Earth by Lights

Who Should Buy This: Comic book fans, people who enjoy alternative/electronic music, and those who find attention to detail important
Album: Skin&Earth
Artist: Lights
Genre: alternative, electronic, pop
Music Rating: 8/10
Lyrics Rating: 8/10
Overall:
8/10
Sounds Like: CHVRCHES, PVRIS, Ryn Weaver
Best thing About this Album: The strong bass and guitar presence has really stepped up on this album.
One thing I wish was different: I missed a stronger presence of technicality and layering in the lyrics that I had grown accustomed to and spoiled with from previous records. It’s still there, but it’s not as apparent in this album.
Website: Lights

Tracks: 14 (including two shorter, instrumental tracks)
Favorites: Until the Light, Savage, New Fears, Kicks, Moonshine, Almost Had Me
Parental Guidance: The comics are rated Teen+ Morphine has obvious drug references. (It’s a metaphor if that makes a difference to you. But the metaphor might be equally age-inappropriate depending upon audience and personal philosophies.) We Were Here has a swear word in the first verse and in the chorus.

With a career as long and consistent as Lights has had, one might imagine that it would be difficult to balance exploring new ground within her art while maintaining the strong sense of identity her fans have come to expect in her writing. One would be incorrect.

When it comes to Lights, innovation in creation is boundless! Her latest album is a conceptual soundtrack to its companion comic series – also written and illustrated entirely by Lights herself.

While either the comics or the album may be enjoyed and understood independently, they come together to create a multidimensional experience that brings Light’s fantasy world to life. It is essentially a peek into what the music of Lights would be like in an alternate dimension – with different cultural and historical influence, and a healthy dose of playful imagination! As a longtime fan of Lights, this album definitely offers up something different and unexpected even though she’s been building up to this since the very beginning of her career.

Here are some of my favorite lines from each track to give you a better lyrical sample of the whole album. Take a look and then take a listen!

“Free fall with me.” — Skydiving

“It’s easy pretending we’re alright.” — Until the Light

“I never knew you could be so savage.” — Savage

“I have these new fears I carry with me so you can feel stronger, and you can know peace.” — New Fears

“You are my morphine.” — Morphine

“Setting flames, taking names.” — We Were Here

“Not all who wander are looking for the exits. Sometimes a diamond is rough around the edges.” — Kicks

“We could be giants, bigger than the walls that hide us.” — Giants

“Stars above us, they can’t touch us.” — Moonshine

“Fall into the wind with you.” — Interlude

“If I leave I believe I could never settle.” — Magnetic Field

“What ever happened to talking it out? Always keeping our thoughts locked in our mouths.” — Fight Club

“You were my halogen, guiding me home.” — Almost Had Me

That’s it. If you loved these songs as much as I did, please consider supporting Lights by purchasing the album from her website or on your favorite digital music store (iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon, etc.)

And holler at me in the comments! I’d love to talk to you all about this album.

P.S. Yes. I am one of those annoying people who’s asking: Is it too early to start talking about the acoustic version for this album? (Sorry, not sorry!)

I’m dying for my copy to arrive, I only purchased the vinyl, Did you happen to purchase the comic books?
if so I will be interested in hearing how the story connects with the music.
I’m not a fan of the comic books in general but the more I hear about it the books its made me more curious see how the two art form link up.
I think I might be president of that annoying club who is asking for an acoustic version. if my copy takes any more than a month to get here I think I might just explode and go postal at the postman. lol

I got my vinyl in the mail, but I haven’t opened it yet because I want to do an unboxing, and I’ve been insanely busy lately. I’m low-key dying because I really want to get it on my table, like yesterday.
I’m like you – I’ve never been into comic books, but my interest was piqued by Lights. I didn’t end up getting any of the comics, so beyond the previews released and the Instagram accounts, I don’t know that full story.
Can I be VP of the annoying club? I think we’d make a good team. XD
Also, good luck with the post. Overseas shipping is so hard. Fingers crossed it get to you sooner rather than later!
