Album: What If Nothing
Artist: WALK THE MOON
Genre: alternative, electronic, pop
Music Rating: 7/10
Lyrics Rating: 7/10
Overall:
7/10
Sounds Like: COIN, Grouplove, Smallpools
Best thing About this Album: The creative fearlessness.
One thing I wish was different: I am a big fan of experimentation as a form of musical growth, but I didn’t love all of the musical choices. Personally, I would’ve preferred if this album leaned more into alternative and less into electronic.
Website: Walk the Moon

Tracks: 13
Favorites: Press Restart, One Foot, Surrender
Parental Guidance: Headphones has a severe swear word in the second verse. All I Want talks about sexuality in the prechorus (“maybe if I had a little more sex” etc). All Night has a swear word in the first verse.
(There are also plenty of subtle undertones throughout the album that people could take as unsuitable for children, but I’m just noting the overt moments. If you’re concerned, read through the lyrics before buying.)

Their sophomore album captured everyone’s attention in 2014, but WALK THE MOON is back with a full length LP that has a brand new sound. That’s not to say that they have completely changed their image or sound profile, because it’s still very much the band that we all know and love. That being said, the music seems to have evolved and expanded into new musical terrain.

While their self-titled album and Talking Is Hard both seemed dreamlike in their time, this album leans even farther into the abstract oasis of a mental paradise, and exists entirely in a dreamland where predetermined constructs are merely rules made to be broken. Nothing is off limits, and chaotic correlations are the logical connections.

Here are some of my favorite lines from each track to give you a better lyrical sample of the whole album. Take a look and then take a listen!

“Maybe it’s not an ending. Maybe it’s a beginning.” — Press Restart

“I can take a beating like a good pair of headphones.” — Headphones

“There’s a desert in my blood and a storm in your eyes.” — One Foot

“Another night in my new skin. Throw emotion to the wind.” — Surrender

“I guess you can’t be free of what you keep inside.” — All I Want

“I’m getting older. Not getting wiser. It’s got me up all night.” — All Night

“I’m chasing down my demons. I can hear them breathing.” — Kamikaze

“Love bites so deep, and we’ve got tiger teeth.” — Tiger Teeth

“Whispers in the heart disclose the rumors of the truth when the mind has all but hidden it from view.” — Sound of Awakening

“I’m feeling love. I feel alive. Don’t care how. Don’t know why.” — Feels Good to Be High

“Hold on to the ones you love, but don’t squeeze too tight.” — Can’t Sleep (Wolves)

“I erase this night, and rewrite you out of my mind.” — In My Mind

“Morning breaks like splattered paint.” — Lost in the Wild

That’s it. If you loved these songs as much as I did, please consider supporting WALK THE MOON by purchasing the album from their website or on your favorite digital music store (iTunes, Apple Music, Google Play, Amazon, etc.)

And holler at me in the comments! I’d love to talk to you all about this album.
