Who Should Buy This: This album is christian rock, through and through. If music embracing Christianity doesn’t inherently offend you, you should buy this album. It’s amazing.
Album: Where the Light Shines Through
Genre: christian, rock
Music Rating: 9/10
Lyrics Rating: 8/10
Sounds Like: NEEDTOBREATHE, Relient K, The Script
One Sentence Summary: This album is truly a work of art that is structurally amazing, creatively flawless, and musically epic.
Best thing About this Album: The ferocious technicality with which these songs are crafted leaves me awe-stricken, inspired, and quite honestly breathless.
One thing I wish was different: While not in any way offended or perturbed, the Christianity hits a little too on the nose for me. I am very Christian, but I personally would prefer art to be more abstract rather than drawing too many conclusions for me (in any subject matter). The more vague, philosophical lines are much more potent here than the tangible ones imo.
Parental Guidance: This album is very Christian. If you are concerned about exposure of religious thoughts and ideals through media, you should probably familiarize yourself with the lyrics (link at the bottom of the post) and be prepared for whatever discussion you feel is appropriate with your child.
Favorites: Float, Where The Light Shines Through, I Wont’ Let You Go, Bull in a China Shop, Live it Well, Hope is the Anthem

Woah! Setting aside subject matter for a second here, I’m going to just look at the structural genius and let my mind expand into an epic explosion of creative technicality. *jaw hits the floor* *moonwalks on the ceiling*
In all seriousness, this album is truly inspiring from a writing perspective (both musically and lyrically). As a longtime Switchfoot fan, I have very many feelings about this album. Most of them are: 😍!
Picking the subject matter back up, we can more clearly appreciate the work of art laid out before us. It is an intensely beautiful journey of light and shadows, doubt and hope. Here are some of my favorite lines from each track:
“Hold the old me down” – Holy Water
“Baby says she’s got that feeling. Moon walking on the ceiling.” – Float
“When you’re feeling like an astronaut stuck on a planet even time forgot” – Where the Light Shines Through
“If you could only let your guard down, you could learn to trust me somehow.” – I Won’t Let You Go
“The truth is what you save from the fire.” – If the House Burns Down Tonight
“I found strength, but it wasn’t what I thought. I found peace in the places I forgot. I found riches ain’t the things that I had bought.” – The Day That I Found God
“I can’t seem to shake this feeling that we both could break through that ceiling.” – Shake This Feeling
“Watching the time on the clock disappear. Fear is all I got left to fear.” – Bull in a China Shop
“I’m living for more than just a funeral.” – Live It Well
“I’m looking for the place that I was born. I’m looking for a way to fix what’s torn. I’m looking for America.” – Looking For America (feat. Lecrae)
“Ain’t we human? Ain’t we all got problems? Honey, rock and roll ain’t gonna solve them.” – Healer of Souls
“My lungs and I were born to fight.” – Hope Is the Anthem
